Parnelli Jones defended American honor in 1963 against the British “Funny Car” Invasion, in one of the most famous and controversial Indianapolis 500’s in history. The diversity of car types that day was almost unprecedented. The traditional Offy roadster was present, a redesigned Novi returned, five re-engine cars with controversial wheels, and perhaps most significantly the first appearance of the Lotus Fords at Indy. But Jones holds on and snags the victory only 34 seconds ahead of Jim Clark's Lotus.
