Some fans thought it would be an exciting battle between McLarens and Eagles. To the "wedge" car fans it was. Gary Bettenhausen in his richly colored blue and yellow Sunoco McLaren, started in 4th and led for a 138 laps. Then, unexpectedly, Jerry Grant in his purple Mystery Eagle seemed to have it in the bag. But it's never over until the checkered flag is dropped! The 1972 Indianapolis 500 was victorious for the McLarens, but it was Mark Donohue behind the wheel instead of Bettenhausen.
